Opening Our Treasures to the King

Matthew 2:1-11, follows the wise men who came looking not for a baby but for a king. They followed the star, refused Herod’s deception and ‘opened their treasures’, laying their best at Jesus’ feet. The gold speaks of giving the King what is truly valuable, above all the heart, with time, talents and resources, as John 3:16 shows the gift God first gave. The frankincense points to worship and prayer offered in the name above every name, worship that must come from the heart and not only the mouth. The myrrh points to the pain, sorrow, sickness and death that Jesus carried to the cross, so that anyone in Christ becomes a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).
